The Method by James Fitch and Morocco Junction by Patt Morrison were were a bit different than I had expected it to be. Especially because of the obvious fact that both were narrated from a woman's perspective unlike the usual male we've been exposed to.
But if I were to recommend someone to read one of these two stories, I'd definitely go with The Method.
Why? Because from beginning to end, the narrator and protagonist, Holly captured and kept our attention by explaining how she's different from the norm. She had me wonder about this mysterious man that walked into Orzo, the way she wondered about him. I was literally writing notes in my book and highlighting/underlining certain words or phrases because I had a feeling it all meant something. This is all unlike Morocco Junction. Sure, it was a bit interesting on how she got her information inspired by her father and her intro really had me because I could really relate when it came to noticing how the streets were a lot creamier than the usual asphalt. But it didn't seem to have the same click that The Method had.
I was a bit taken on how Holly was the one being hypnotized by Richard, or Anthony [whatever his real name is] rather than it being the other way around, but I loved the way she dealt with it in the end.
I was worried about reading another disappointing end, but it was no where near. I kind of wish the story had gone a bit longer though. But regardless, it was definitely a great read and I recommend it.
Reading both of these stories shocked me because when i was first reading the morocco junction, i thought the narrator would be a man. So in my mind, i read the story in a mans voice. haha, until i realized she was a woman, i had to read it over again. Both of these woman were indeed different from the norm. They were both very independent rather than the regular woman in noir stories.
ReplyDeleteTo start I loved the title “Was it Richard? or Anthony?”. I think it really captures what I was thinking as I read “The Method”. A lot of the things you described doing I remember I also did as I read “The Method”. One of the things was the mysterious man that came into the restaurant. I was constantly wondering who he was. Why he chose her to talk to. I also loved how she turned the tables on him at the end. When I began reading this I was also worried that I would not like the end to. I find that with a lot of books. I do not like the end. With this one though it was different. The whole time I was reading I was wondering what was gonna happen. Then when I finally found out I was surprised. I also wish it had been a little longer. Liked reading your post. Look forward to reading more from you.
ReplyDeleteYes, I loved how the author wrote Holly’s character, from the beginning it is explained to us that she is a bit twisted, so throughout the story we are aware of what’s going on and of her state of mind. The Author really brought us into the story it made us wonder about the mystery man and the role he would later play in Holly’s life. I loved the way she dealt with it at the end too it seemed as if the roles of the protagonist and the femme fatal had been reversed. Richard seduced Holly and in the end, once she realized she had been played she gave him a taste of his own medicine. Yes, it would have been nice if the author had continued and we could have seen a glimpse of what happens between Holly and Mariah.
